-
Collimators are essential component of Industrial Radiography set up as they provide
radiation safety to the operating personnel and general public at large by directing the emerging radiation
beam to the useful area of exposure.A collimator with optimum design features also helps in reducing the
scattered radiation which is turn results in radiographs with better sensitivity. Considering the above
factors, tungsten collimators with light weight and compact design suitable for directional and panoramic
type of exposures have been developed by Radiation Equipment Programme of BRIT.The collimators are
fabricated using the above tungsten alloy and 304 stainless steel material as cladding. The tungsten alloy
shield for the directional collimator is designed to provide a 50 degree radiation beam and is encased with
stainless steel and totally sealed by argon arc welding.Salient Features:
- Shielding material : Tungsten alloy
- Density : 17.2 to 17.6 gm/cc
- Half value layer for Ir.192: 3.4 mm
- Tenth value layer for Ir.192 : 11.22 mm
- Directional Collimator : For unidirectional exposures
- Panoramic Collimator : For Panoramic exposures
Directional Collimator :
- When an exposure is taken with the directional collimator attached to the exposure head of the guide
tube of gamma camera, the radiation beam coming out will have a 50 degree solid angle in the forward
direction. - The primary radiation beam intensity in all other area except the front side will be reduced to 5% with
the collimator. - At a source to film distance (SFD) of 50 cm, the beam will cover an area of a circle with 24 cm radius
which is sufficient to cover a film size of 37 cm x 30 cm. - Overall size : 44 mm dia x 82 mm long.
- Weight : 1.15kg.
Panoramic Collimator :
- When an exposure is taken with the collimator attached to the exposure head of the gamma camera guide
tube, the radiation beam will have a 30 degree solid angle all around for panoramic exposures. - The primary radiation beam intensity in other areas will be reduced to 5% with the collimator.
- At a source to film distance (SFD) of 50 cm, the beam will cover a width of a 27 cm.
- Overall size : 44 mm dia x 82 mm long.
- Weight : 1kg.
- Gamma chamber 5000
-
Gamma Chamber 5000 is a compact self shielded cobalt-60 gamma irradiator providing an
irradiation volume of approximately 5000cc. There are other variations of the Gamma Chambers which are also
available. The material for irradiation is placed in an irradiation chamber located in the vertical drawer
inside the lead flask. This drawer can be moved up and down with the help of a system of motorised drive
which enables precise positioning of the irradiation chamber at the centre of the radiation field.Radiation
field is provided by a set of stationary cobalt-60 sources placed in a cylindrical cage. The sources are
doubly encapsulated in corrosion resistant stainless steel pencils and are tested in accordance with
international standards. Four access holes of 8 mm diameter are provided in the vertical drawer for
introduction of service sleeves for gases, thermocouple, etc. A mechanism for rotating/stirring samples
during irradiation is also incorporated. The lead shield provided around the source is adequate to keep the
external radiation field well within permissible limits. The Gamma Chamber 5000 unit can be installed in a
room measuring 4m X 4m X 4m.Features of GC 5000:

- Gamma irradiation of cellular blood components is the best current technology to reduce the risk of
T-GVHD to the recipients as confirmed by research and therefore being widely practiced world over in
hospitals and blood banks as a life saving approach to this problem. Blood is usually irradiated in
standard blood bags in dedicated blood irradiators using cobalt-60 or caesium-137 radioactive source.
The usual recommended radiation doses are 25 Gy to 35 Gy (1 Gy = 100 rad) for this purposes. - BRIT has designed and developed a dedicated blood irradiator called Blood Irradator-2000 (Bl-2000. It is
a self-shielded, compact and versatile Gamma Irradiator which can house cobalt-60 source upto 30 TBq
(810 Curies) / 112.85 TBq (3050 Ci) of Cs-137. - It provides a dose rate ofabout 11 Gy/minute approximately inside the sample chamber. It is incorporated
with a sample rotating mechanism to obtain better uniformity of dose to the products. The control system
is PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) based with touch sensitive color screen using user-friendly
software and a printer for data recording. - The unit can be installed in a room without any additional shielding. Its design conforms to all
relevant national and international standards and safety codes. It meets the requirement of Type B(U)
package for transportation.
