Regional Centre, Kota (RAPPCOF)
Regional Centre, Kota also known as RAPP Cobalt Facility (RAPPCOF) was established within the exclusion zone of Rajasthan Atomic Power Project in the early seventies to coincide with the commissioning of first unit of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS).
RAPPCOF is the only facility in the country with a complete production cycle, where all works from receiving of cobalt adjusters from power reactors to fabrication, supply and post-supply jobs are carried out in a systematic and safe manner. RAPPCOF is the nodal agency catering to the demand of various types of Cobalt-60 sealed sources for all high intensity gamma source applications such as Teletherapy of cancer treatment, industrial irradiators, etc. The facility has also been exporting these Sealed Sources regularly which has given BRIT a presence on the global map.
This Centre is involved in:
- Production and Supply of Cobalt-60 Teletherapy Sources (CTS) for treatment of Cancer
Cobalt-60 Teletherapy Sources (CTS) are used in Telecobalt machine for teletherapy treatment of cancer. BRIT supplies standard doubly encapsulated CTS with indigenous high specific activity having source strength of 160 – 240 RMM as per the customer requirement. The standard CTS having outer dimension of 23.3mm dia x 36.7mm length in SS-316L encapsulation and E65535 classification are fabricated at RAPPCOF.
- Production and Supply of Industrial Irradiator Sources for Multi-Purpose Gamma Irradiation Plants
High intensity Cobalt-60 sources are mainly used for radiation processing or Irradiation in Multi Purpose Gamma Irradiation Plants for sterilisation, food preservation, sludge hygienisation, etc.
BRIT supplies W-91, BC-188 and IS-99 type Multi-Purpose Gamma Irradiator sources. At RAPPCOF W-91 type sources having outer dimension of 27.2mm dia x 463mm length in SS-316L encapsulation and E65535 with bend test 5 classification, BC-188 type sources having outer dimension of 11.1mm dia x 451mm length in SS-316L encapsulation and E64535 with bend test 5 classification and IS-99 type sources having outer dimension of 14.0mm dia x 451mm length in SS-316L encapsulation and E65535 with bend test 5 classification are fabricated for Multi-Purpose Gamma Irradiators.
- Recycling/disposal of imported and decayed Cobalt-60 Teletherapy Sources (CTS)
BRIT undertakes disposal or recycling of imported and decayed sources after the useful life of sealed sources. Cobalt-60 Teletherapy Sources (CTS) are reused in Multi Purpose Gamma Irradiator sources (W-91 type) and Multi Purpose Gamma Irradiator sources are reused in Gamma Chamber sources to avoid unwanted dumping of decayed activity.
